Josh and Emiley McGuinness were not sure what to expect when they arrived at the Landers Center for the recent 2018 Spring ES Group Gathering, which was hosted by Expediter Services. Seeking a career change and a chance to see the country, the McGuinnesses represent part of a next generation of drivers who are reserved and thoughtful in exploring the opportunities the trucking industry has to offer.
Currently in their first year in trucking and part of a fleet assigned to a leading expedited carrier, Josh and Emiley joined approximately 100 professional drivers who attended the 2018 Spring ES Group Gathering (EGG) to hear insights and perspectives from some of the trucking industry’s most respected leaders and innovators. The presentations during the two-day program covered a wide range of topics related to opportunities in the trucking industry, including the latest trends related to pay for company drivers and owner-operators. The conference also looked at the growing need for capacity and the impact of the driver shortage over the long and short terms.
“We’re pretty new to the industry and it was very helpful for us to hear what’s happening with opportunities, freight and the economy,” said Josh. “When we decided to come to the EGG, we didn’t know what the conference would cover and what we would see over the weekend. We were really impressed. There was a lot of very good information. I’m glad that we were able to hear what everyone had to say.”
The featured presenters at the EGG were Women In Trucking President and CEO Ellen Voie, Managing Director and head of Stephens’ Transportation & Logistics Group Michael Miller, Chief Operating Officer for The National Transportation Institute Leah Shaver, Vice President of Recruiting for Forward Air Ryan Gilliam and Nick Burch, Director of Recruiting for Panther Premium Logistics, a Service of ArcBest. Attendees at the EGG heard insights on the state of the economy as well as the strength of the prospects that can now be found within the trucking industry.
The professional drivers in attendance for the 2018 Spring EGG included a number of women, and all of the experts at the conference spent time during their presentations to discuss the important role women can play in addressing the talent demand being created by the driver shortage. They also addressed the generational shift taking place among professional drivers. For conference attendee Nora Weston, the information she received at the 2018 Spring EGG was further confirmation of her decision to buy a truck through ES and the 150 Business Challenge – the program that ES developed in collaboration with Women In Trucking to establish 150 women-owned transportation businesses within a year’s time.
“I can’t say enough about the way that ES helped me through the buying process with my new truck, and I’m proud to be a part of the 150 Challenge,” said Nora. “I picked up a lot of valuable information during the EGG, and I am excited about what’s ahead in the future. With the kind of support and the opportunities that are provided through ES, I believe that my husband and I can achieve our dream of starting and growing a fleet.”
The 150 Business Challenge has now helped more than 30 women start small businesses in the trucking industry. Forward Air and Panther Premium, a service of ArcBest, are participating in the program, and both carriers have benefitted from the non-asset capacity generated by the new owner-operators buying their trucks through ES and the 150 Business Challenge program.

The comprehensive program developed by ES offers independent contractors and fleet drivers highly effective and cost-saving true ownership options with the ability to achieve greater earning capacity. Expediter Services originally designed the program model to address the capacity needs in the expedited transportation market. Over the past couple of years, the program has expanded and the 2018 Spring ES Group Gathering also focused on general trucking and opportunities through the ES Network and its SuccessInTrucking.com program.
